Bulgari 168 New Bond Street

Major refurbishment of Bulgari flagship boutique

New York based designer Peter Marino Architects developed the interior fit out design working alongside London based McDonald Architects.

The design comprised multiple alterations to the existing 1860s Grade ll Listed store, including a feature stair, extensive use of marble to floors and walls and new passenger lift and services.

There were no records of the building structure available and opening-up works revealed evidence of multiple phases of past alterations. Many of these alterations were found to be defective. It took a considerable effort to capture and record the existing structure. This was essential due to the demanding requirement of the design.

The widespread use of large marble slabs increased floor loading and requirement for stiffness. The number of different floor construction cases necessitated a rage strengthening details be developed, each of which had to be incorporated whilst pursuing good conservation practice.

A new passenger lift required a lift pit to be constructed on the party wall. This necessitated local underpinning of the party wall with the Royal Institution.

An open tread feature stair formed a centre piece of the refurbishment. This comprised individual solid marble treads carefully chosen to maintain the marble veins presenting as having been cut from a single piece.

Other project work comprised repairs to timber roof lanterns, support to marble columns and structural alterations for services.
